Aybek Ahmedov has been invited to join an International Working Group of the Comité Maritime International

Aybek Ahmedov, partner and head of shipping and transport law practice at KIAP, has been invited to join an International Working Group of the Comité Maritime International on the Reformulation of the Lex Maritima at a recent meeting of CMI General Assembly in Istanbul.

Comité Maritime International (CMI) is an international non-governmental organization. It was founded in 1897 on the initiative of International Law Association with a purpose to promote unification of maritime and trade law, maritime customs and practice. This unification is implemented by the means of drafting international agreements, preparation of uniform norms of national legislation, study and summary of practice, stimulating the creation of national maritime association in different countries. Russia is also a member of this organization along with 48 national associations worldwide.

CMI has prepared 30 drafts of conventions so far, 16 of them were adopted on international conferences.

In recent years, CMI is engaged in drafting conventions on issues pertaining marine insurance, bill of lading clauses, maritime arbitration, legal status of maritime terminals, ships in foreign ports, ship registration and acceleration of convention ratification by States.

CMI also publishes various collections on international conventions on maritime law, CMI documents and other reference publication. Its headquarters is located in Antwerp, Belgium.

Aybek commented his joining the CMI working group in the following words: “I am happy to be a member of the team of high-caliber professionals in maritime law at the oldest maritime organization in the world. I believe I will be able to contribute effectively to the worldwide restatement of maritime law by joining this Group”.
