KIAP Lawyers of the International Commercial Arbitration practice took part in the FDI Moot 2025

Date: 21.11.2025

From 29 October to 2 November 2025, one of the most prestigious international competitions in the field of investment arbitration, the Foreign Direct Investment International Arbitration Moot (FDI Moot), was held in Boston (USA).

This year, the HSE University Faculty of Law was represented by a team of students who achieved an outstanding result, winning the award for the Best Respondent Memorial, an achievement that repeated the university's record of 2019.

KIAP is proud that representatives of the Firm's International Commercial Arbitration practice are directly involved in this success:

  1. Artem Gritsuk, Junior Associate of the International Commercial Arbitration practice at KIAP, as part of the HSE University team, won the award for the Best Respondent Memorial;
  2. Anastasia Ryabova, Associate of the International Commercial Arbitration practice at KIAP, acted as an arbitrator at the preliminary online rounds organized by the Russian Arbitration Association (RAA).

"FDI Moot is a unique competition where young lawyers apply their in-depth knowledge of international law in practice, develop strategic thinking and legal writing skills. Congratulations to the whole team and, of course, to our colleagues – we are incredibly proud of them. Their victory demonstrates that they not only know the theory, but also think like real strategists in the most complex issues of international investment law. We see them as future leaders in arbitration," said Stepan Sultanov, Partner at KIAP and Head of International Arbitration Practice.

The problem of the 2025 competition included the questions of jurisdiction of arbitrators in the context of the succession of states under bilateral investment treaties, the application of the Monetary Gold principle, as well as the analysis of possible violations of obligations to ensure full protection and security of the investment and guarantee free transfer of funds without discrimination.

FDI Moot annually brings together students, teachers and practicing lawyers from all over the world, contributing to the development of professional skills in the field of international investment law and arbitration.
