KIAP Partner overseeing the consulting practice in African countries. James Friedlander, a US-qualified lawyer with over 55 years of international experience in advising on major investment projects and financial transactions around the world. James served as a consultant to the World Bank and IFC for over 32 years, advising governments on how to attract foreign investment into Africa. He has been a partner at Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld,  a senior manager at Citibank and a non-executive director of NMBZ Holdings (Zimbabwe), Franconia Minerals Corp (Canada), and the International Eye Foundation. James has advised the governments of over 30 countries on issues of direct foreign investment and major global corporations on working with local partners in emerging markets.

  • Advising the World Bank and participating in its mission to Accra, Ghana for the purpose of reviewing the investment climate, the Government's investment policies and the legal, regulatory, administrative and institutional barriers to foreign investment.
  • Legal support of LUKOIL’s investment projects in Russia and Africa.
  • Supporting ALICO in the implementation of investment projects in Kenya in real estate and the industrial sectors.
  • Providing consultations for Arkel International on sugar projects in Kenya.
  • Advising BHP on the acquisition of a exploration license for nickel in Tanzania.
  • Legal support of opening of Citibank’s branches in Africa.
  • Supporting investment projects of Core Carbon Group under joint implementation pursuant to the Kyoto Protocol.
  • Advising Gecamines on joint venture negotiations in mining projects in the Democratic Republic of the Congo; advising on asset-based financing for cobalt exports.
  • Advising IFC on investment projects in several African countries.
  • Advising Jeep on a joint venture for the assembly of Jeep vehicles in Kenya.
  • Providing legal support of investment projects for the Mt. Kenya Safari Club in Kenya and financial restructuring.
  • Advising the National Bank of Liberia on investments in the mining, financial and agricultural sectors.
  • Advising Stanbic Bank on acquisition of nine banks in sub-Saharan Africa.
  • Supporting USAID in investment climate projects in Liberia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
  • Legal support of World Bank’s projects in several countries in Africa, Nepal, Guyana and Indonesia; review of public procurement laws and practices in 5 African countries.
  • Advising Nord Anglia on a joint venture in Russia.
  • Advising Mitsui on investment projects in Russia pursuant to the Kyoto Protocol.
  • Advising Sante Fe Mining on an investment in a gold mining project in Kyrgyzstan.
  • Legal support of SIDANCO’s joint ventures and financings in Russia.
  • Investment climate advisory services as a consultant for the World Bank/IFC for over 32 years to 26 countries in Africa, the Middle East and Central/Eastern Europe, including the drafting of investment laws and regulations.
